Wicklow County Schools Senior Hurling

Thursday, May 12th, Arklow: De La Salle senior hurlers enjoyed two stunning victories in the county schools blitz. First up were Scoil Chonglais from Baltinglass, a side better known for their footballing prowess. While the opponents hurled with conviction and enthusiasm, the De La Salle's superior skills yielded an impressive tally of scores. Vinny Roche made an impressive comeback at cornerback, developing a quick rapport with veteran Colin Murphy, while Donal Naughton at halfback displayed his usual towering presence. Not to be outdone, Ricky Farrell was similarly impressive on the fullback line when introduced after the break. The Dela also dominated at midfield but it was up front this dominance really showed. Feeding off a healthy supply of ball, forwards Mark Murphy and Mark Sexton and shook the net on two occasions each, to which were added points by Vinny 0' Flaherty, Kevin Coady, and Ciaran Naughton. Baltinglass threatened on a few occasions but could not match the greater firepower of the more experienced De La Salle squad. Final score DLS: 4-8; Baltinglass: 1-2.

Baltinglass suffered another heavy defeat against St. David's of Greystones, who then provided the opposition for De La Salle in their final encounter of the day. This proved a tougher challenge and a more competitive match. However with Lee Kavanagh's aerial dominance at midfield and Mark Kavanagh's tireless work at halfback, St. David's were hard pressed to win possession. On occasions when they did, young Conor Higgins, making his senior debut at corner back, was supremely assured and produced a very confident performance. With keeper Ian McDonald's puck outs finding their range, it was only a matter of time before DLS forwards gained the ascendancy once more. A great all round team performance produced a winning score of 3-4 to 2-2, to leave De La Salle as overall winners of the competition. Squad: I. McDonald, C. Murphy, C. Higgins, M. Kavanagh, D. Naughton, L. Kavanagh, C. Naughton, M. Murphy, K. Coady, V. O' Flaherty, M. Sexton, V .Roche, R. Farrell.
