The Sporting First Years

April 27th: The First Year Super Sevens tournament was held in Kilcoole Gaelic Grounds with nearly all schools in Wicklow, both girls and boys, competing. De La Salle was represented in both hurling and football codes.

The Gaelic team got off to a great start winning three games on the trot. They were then unlucky to lose by a point to Scoil Raithin. However they bounced back to defeat Kilcoole forcing a three way play-off with Pres Bray and Raithin. With a place in the Final against Abbey C.c. up for grabs DLS were drawn against the Pres, whom they had already beaten by two points in the group stages. This time though, the boys from Bray managed to shade it by the slimmest of margins. Great performances from Killian O' Mahoney and Kevin Wylie and the whole team throughout helped the DLS progress to this stage of the competition.

The hurlers faced a difficult task playing the likes of Avondale and the Abbey but displayed great commitment and bravery nonetheless. Especially impressive were Danny McDevitt and dual star Niall Deveraux whose efforts against the odds deserve special mention. Team captain Stefan O' Brien notched up nine points in total, while Tony Rice and Mark McWilliams put in tireless work in the backs. The team can feel hard done by in not progressing to the playoff stages, especially as they had to play all their games against a strong breeze with no change around at half time.
