Students Council: Chairman's Address As the school year is now coming to a close I would like to take this opportunity as chairman to wish all students sitting their Junior and Leaving Cert exams the very best of luck on behalf of the Student Council. Being on the Student Council has been a very productive experience for me as throughout the year I have learned much about leadership and responsibility. I feel that this will stand to me later in life. I have also vastly improved my organisation and communication skills over the past nine months which are very important for any career or lifestyle. During the year we helped to organise and run many events and fundraisers including raffles for the "Tsunami Buy a Boat" project which raised €800 and an Eater raffle which raised €280 for sports equipment. Our civvies day for the Guatemala Orphanage project raised €423. We also reviewed the school policies on homework and bullying in correspondence with the Principal, staff, and Parents Association, and we are arranging (with Ms. O' Carroll's help) for a bicycle rack to be installed over the coming holidays. We sold wristbands in aid of cancer research and school sports, and on May 20th we held the "Ice-Cream Friday" event which raised over €400 for Downs Syndrome Ireland. We also organised the elections for next year's council which were held at the beginning of May. The newly elected members have already found themselves busy! All in all, a hectic year's work but a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience which gave me a new insight into school life. I would like to thank all the present members for their work, Ms. 0' Carroll, Mr. Brennan, and Ms. Smullen for their help and support, Mr. Mc Inerney as Coordinator and all teachers for facilitating our work. Finally, I would like to wish the incoming Student's Council the very best of luck in September. The new structure, which means all years will be represented on the council, promises to be very beneficial and productive for the school. Tomas Earls (Outgoing Chairman) |
