A Day with Labour One of the prizes for winning the All-Ireland Debating Competition was to shadow a TD for a day. I had the privilege of shadowing Pat Rabbitte, leader of the Labour Party. As a member of Labour Youth this was an ideal prize! After finally managing to get through heavy security at Leinster House, I found myself in Labour Headquarters. I was introduced to all the deputies by Liz McManus and spoke to such luminaries as Michael D. Higgins and Ruairi Quinn. Then it was time for Taoiseach's Questions in the Dail. I watched with excitement as Bertie was bombarded with criticism from Pat Rabbitte himself. Finally I had the honour of meeting the great man myself. After buying me an excellent lunch, Mr. Rabbitte discussed party policies with me and then took me on a personal tour of Dail Eireann. I left Leinster House fully convinced that politics is the career for me and who knows, perhaps De La Salle College will produce a future Taoiseach! |
